Apple iPad Mini 6th Gen

In a recent launch event, Apple released the iPad Mini 6th Gen and a few other devices. Notwithstanding the new iPhone 13 series having the center stage, some devices like the Apple Watch 7 series and the iPad Mini attracted everyone’s attention. In particular, the iPad Mini, with its redesigned build, better performance, and improved cameras, has been a game-changer of sorts.

After a long wait, Apple has finally succeeded in justifying its pocket tablet with the Apple iPad Mini 6. Despite cutting down on the size, there is not much to complain about the iPad Mini 6. With some of the most attractive features and specs, Apple has done a fine job. A more powerful processor, premium design, improved battery, better connectivity, and so much more make it a device to look forward to.

Further, the 256GB variants are available at ₹60,900 and ₹74,900 for the Wi-fi and cellular variants, respectively. The iPad Mini 6 is available in Space Grey, Pink, Purple, and Starlight colors. The official sale for the iPad Mini 6 in India starts on October 1.

Apple iPad Mini 6th Gen: Detailed Specifications

Unconventionally, a successor to the iPad Air 2020, the iPad Mini 6 looks similar to it but better. With the same aluminum build design, slimmer bezels, rounded corners, flat edges, the new Mini has stepped into the zone of the Air. However, there was an ask for revamp in the iPad Mini’s redundant design for years. Apple has finally listened to the users and has delivered in a much better way.

There is also a power button that is touch-enabled and a magnetic dock for the Apple Pencil. All these remind us very much of the iPad Air, and we don’t believe that we are at fault here. Dimensions of 7.7 × 5.3 × 0.25 inches make the iPad Mini one of the tiniest tablets to ever be on the plate. This compact form factor brings down the weight of the device. It weighs 293gms which is a bit lesser compared to its predecessor. Further, the volume buttons have moved to the top edge compared to the right-hand side placement on the older versions.

Moving to the bottom, we have a Type-C port that supports charging and connectivity. Towards the right, there is the Apple Pencil connector and the SIM tray. However, the tablet does not come with an Apple Pencil and a headphone jack. These additions could have made the tablet a winner.

Undoubtedly, the iPad Mini 6 has the best screen for a tablet of its size. It sports an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display with a pixel density of 326-PPI. With a resolution of 2266 × 1488 pixels, the screen feels sharper and crisper than ever. For a tablet, this seems not the best – but we can’t complain. A suitably bright screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz is what you get to make up for it. We are not complaining again when we would have wished to get a 120Hz display for the price. Finally, the TrueTone feature works like magic as it allows users to have a stress-free viewing experience for the eyes.

The newer cameras in the iPad Mini are worth the hype for a reason. The much improved 12-megapixel sensors on both sides of the device promise some great results. Add with it the Center stage feature that always keeps you in the center of the frame at all times – you are in for a treat.

The rear camera is a wide lens with autofocus through which you can record videos up to 4K at 60 frames per second. However, strangely the videos recorded in 1080p/60fps seem relatively better than the 4K videos. The rear camera allows a digital zoom of up to 5X. The front camera promises a fine virtual meeting experience with its quality of features. It is an ultrawide camera with CenterStage support that we mentioned before. In brief, the cameras here perform well, producing quality videos and pictures, unlike in many other tablets.

Hardware and Performance

The iPad Mini 6 is powered by an all-new A15 Bionic chipset which is the first for Apple. It has a six-core CPU, five-core graphics, and a 16-core Neural engine. This powerful processor makes sure you don’t miss out on a single app or game under the sun that it can’t support. In addition, multi-tasking becomes fun with this new processor coupled with iPadOS 15. However, it can’t be called more powerful than the M1 chipset of the iPad Pro, but the A15 does wonders in itself.

The tablet comes with 64GB and 256GB options, while the RAM is still unrevealed. For users wanting a device for long-term can go for the 256GB variant. Furthermore, the iPad Mini, in a new, supports 5G connectivity. The tablet performs well in almost all departments without lagging or showing signs of fatigue. However, you can’t compare the two chipsets that stand on two different horizons.

The tablet’s small size is deceptive in terms of the audio quality it offers. Sporting the same layout as the iPad Air 2020, the iPad Mini 6 has four speaker grills for two speakers. It offers authentic stereo sound because of the placement of both speakers on opposite sides.

The speakers perform significantly well with crisp highs, mids, and lows. However, the absence of a headphone jack, unlike other iPad Minis, keeps the users wondering.

Battery Life

Despite Apple’s claims of offering an “all-day battery life,” we know how Apple devices perform. Apple has had its fair share of battery draining issues in the past, and it seems to have improved here. With the company’s claim of up to 10 hours on a single charge, the 5078 mAh battery does the job well. The tablet offers a little over 10 hours in everyday usage, and that’s great for the performance it delivers.

Unlike many other Apple devices, the iPad Mini gets rid of the lightning port and sports a USB-C port. The tablet comes with a charger and cable in the box supporting 20W fast charging. However, there is no wireless charging available for the device.

The iPad Mini 6, just like its bigger counterpart, comes running on iPadOS 15 out of the box. The new operating system offers a wide range of features. It adds a whole bunch of things for the Apple Pencil. Features like Quick Note and Scribble make your user experience interesting with the new OS.

Our Opinion

The iPad Mini 6 is the best tablet for users looking for a compact device with high-end specs. Despite not being as powerful as the iPad Pro, the iPad Mini performs well for the tasks thrown at it. With newly added features like 5G support, excellent cameras, sharp audio, and a compact design – you can’t be asking more. However, for the price at which it offers all that, there are better devices out there waiting for you. In contrast, the ecosystem of Apple is unparalleled, and you can’t compromise with that. All and all, the iPad Mini is a good buy for people willing to upgrade to or try a new tablet that offers an intuitive experience along with some cool features. In brief, it is the best compact tablet you can find in the market.
